US Visas for Students from India Types

It is not difficult to obtain a student visa for the United States from India, but you must adhere to all regulations and allow plenty of time to prepare and submit your paperwork. Before submitting an application for an F-1 student visa to the US from India, you must be admitted to a degree program at an accredited US higher education institution. (For more information on the college research and application process, read our guide to studying in the USA.)

Once you have been admitted to a US university, you can begin the application for an American student visa from India.

F-1 Visa

"F-1 and M-1 student visas are available for exchange students from India to the USA. Students must apply for an M-1 visa if they are enrolled in vocational or nonacademic classes. A F-1 visa is necessary for students who are enrolled in academic courses at an accredited institution in order to earn a degree. The F-1 student visa is necessary for the following program types:
- University or college
- High school
- Private elementary school
- Seminary
- Language training institute
- Conservatory"

Child Student Visa

"Children who are between the ages of 4 and 17 and want to attend an independent school in the UK are eligible for this visa. Previously known as the Tier 4 (Child) Student Visa."

Student Visa USA Cost

If you're a student and you want to study in the US, you'll need to meet certain requirements. First, you'll need to apply for a visa. Then, once you've been approved, you'll need to apply to a US university. Once you're accepted, you'll need to arrive in the US and begin your studies.

To be a student in the United States, you must first apply and be accepted to a US university or college that is certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). After you are admitted, you will receive a Form I-20 from the institution's international student office, which is a paper record of your information in the database called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

When you apply for a visa, you must pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa application fee. This fee is different for each type of visa.

To apply for a student visa to study in the United States, you will need to pay a SEVIS fee of $350 and an application fee of $160. For most exchange visitors with Form DS-2019, the SEVIS fee is $220.

To get the F-1 visa approved, you need to show that you have enough money to cover your education costs - tuition, room and board, and other expenses at the school you plan to attend.

SEVIS Fees

The Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) is an online database that keeps track of F, M, and J visa holders (as well as their dependents) from the time they receive their initial paperwork (either an I-20 or a DS-2019) until they graduate/leave school or complete/leave the program.

SEVIS Fee Exception

An F1 visa permits overseas students to study full-time at an institution in the United States that is part of the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). F1 visa applications cost roughly $510, and you should apply at least three months before the start date of your course.

Applicants who are engaging in a US government-sponsored programme (programmes with codes beginning with G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7) are exempt from paying the SEVIS fee.

Visa Type Description Fee amount Fee amount in rupees
F Exchange visitors $160 Rs.11520.00
J Exchange visitors $160 Rs. 11520.00
M Students (Vocational) $160 Rs. 11520.00

US Student Visa Eligibility

India is the second most common country of origin for foreign exchange visitors and students in the US. (The first is China.) About 94,000 Indians applying for student visas to the USA intend to pursue graduate-level education. Students with an internship on OPT (Optional Practical Training) credentials come in second place; they may still be enrolled in their US university or have just completed their studies.

Approximately 80% of all Indian students go to the US to study in graduate or undergraduate programs in engineering, science, technology, or math (STEM), and 10% go to study in graduate or undergraduate programs in business. California, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, Texas, and California are the most popular states for international students.

Requirements

The current wait times for the required visa interviews range from 12 calendar days (Chennai/Madras) to 36 calendar days (Hyderabad). Because wait times vary, make sure to book your US visa appointment as soon as you can. On the website of the US Department of State, you can view the anticipated wait times.

What you should bring with you to your student visa interview:
- Passport
- A copy of the photo you will use for your visa
- DS-160 and I-901 SEVIS payment confirmation pages
- I-20
- School transcript and official test scores you used on your university application
- Diploma (if applicable)
- Bank statements you used to fill out your college application

Cost

Although there are no regulations requiring a minimum bank balance to apply for an F-1 student visa to the USA from India, it costs about $500 USD. The cost is divided into two fees: the DS-160 form fee ($160) and the I-901 SEVIS fee ($350). When your program begins, you have 120 days to apply for your student, nonimmigrant visa. However, you shouldn't wait too long after receiving your acceptance letter because the USA student visa application process from India can take several months.

Living Expenses in the US

The estimated living cost for the US is around $10,000 to $18,000 per year, which averages around $1,000 to $1,500 per month. This includes your accommodation costs, room, and board, food, travel, textbooks, weather-appropriate clothing, and entertainment expenses as well.

The USA is a popular study destination among international students because of its flexible education system, vibrant campus life, academic excellence, cultural diversity, flexible education system, and availability of numerous job opportunities. However, in spite of this, as per the latest Open Doors Report 2021, the number of Indian students who went to US universities in 2020-21 was 1.67 lakh. This depicts a drop of 13% compared to Indian students who went to the USA for higher studies in 2019-20.

The reasons for the decline could be the COVID-19 restrictions or the higher living expenses in USA for international students. The cost of living in USA for international students is higher than in countries like Canada, France, Malaysia, etc. Some of the questions that can go over and over again in the minds of international students are where will they stay, is the budget planned enough for food, insurance, and study bills, how much expenses should be kept aside for additional expenses, etc. In this article, we will explain the cost of living for international students in USA.

Careers + Work Opportunities

One of the most crucial considerations for students who plan to pursue higher education in the USA is a post-study work visa. Three different student visas-the F1 visa, the M1 visa, and the J1 visa-allow graduates to continue their studies in the US for a set period of time.

International students with an F1 student visa are permitted to work up to a year in temporary positions that are closely related to their major field of study. After finishing their studies, F1 visa holders can apply for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

When an international student completes a degree program in the US, they are eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), a one-year work and stay-back permit. There are two types of OPT: Post-Completion OPT, which begins after one's studies are over, and Pre-Completion OPT, which can be used while one is still in school.
- Pre-completion OPT: You can apply for pre-completion OPT after you have received your full-time enrollment in an educational institution that has been certified by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to enrol F-1 students. The duration of the course must be at least 12 months. If authorized, you can work part-time for a maximum of 20 hours per week when your classes are in session. During the holidays you can work full-time.
- Post-completion OPT: You can apply for post-completion OPT after completing your studies.

Part-time Work Opportunities

Students are allowed a maximum of 20 hours per week. With F-1 Visa: on-campus work is allowed and off-campus work is permitted only after the first academic year. Maximum of 40 hours per week during breaks.

Post Study Work VISA

With F-1 Visa: Students completing a Bachelors or Masters program can get Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension and stay for 12 months in the USA.

Students pursuing STEM courses get an additional 17 months (making a total of 29 months) under STEM OPT extension. With J-1 or M-1 Visa: Students get a grace period of 30 days to apply for a work visa.

Financial Planing

Before issuing your visa documents, OISS is required by U.S. Immigration regulations to confirm that you have the financial means to pay the estimated tuition and living costs for the first year of your program. These figures are approximations. Although your yearly costs may differ, this is the bare minimum OISS needs to confirm for immigration.

ESTIMATED ANNUAL COST

The university's updated current estimate of the cost of attendance for international students for the academic year 2022-2023 is as follows:
- Undergraduate Students: $68,591 - Graduate Students: $54,863
- MTM Program: $84,737
- Students with Dependents: Married students add $4,000 if accompanied by a spouse. Students bringing children add $2,000 for each child.
